‘From manuscript to print: Pan Tadeusz in various editions and translations’ exhibition

This unique exhibition presents a collection of editions of the Polish national epic, including historical 19th-century editions, richly illustrated publications and contemporary translations into languages from around the world. It shows how Pan Tadeusz has evolved over nearly two centuries. Among the editions on display are a first Parisian printing from 1834, a miniature edition, and the first edition printed on Polish soil under Russian partition censorship. A special place in the exhibition is occupied by the illustrated editions, including the renowned prints by Elwiro Michał Andriolli, as well as works by contemporary artists which vividly depict the world portrayed in the poem. An important aspect of Pan Tadeusz's publishing history is its international scope — the work has been translated into thirty-four languages. Examples presented include unusual versions, such as translations into Korean, Georgian, Hebrew and Kashubian.
