"Iceland through the eyes of early travellers, presented in a unique bibliophile edition"
The exhibition presents woodcut illustrations derived from the 16th-century work of the eminent scholar Olaus Magnus, The History of the Peoples of the North, selected from chapters depicting life in ancient Iceland. They were hand-carved and printed by Tadeusz Grajpel, in accordance with the techniques and principles used in historical woodcut workshops.
Tadeusz Grajpel (b. 1955) is the founder and director of his own workshop in Końskie, which has been in operation since 1994 and specialises in the reconstruction of historical techniques related to the history of documents, books, and woodcut printing. He created Poland’s first educational replica of a Gutenberg press, used for workshops and printing demonstrations. For over 30 years, he has researched and recreated woodcut techniques, producing hundreds of replicas of early printing blocks, including medieval and Renaissance examples. He is actively engaged in research and educational work, collaborating with museums and research centres, and undertaking publishing projects, including reprints and facsimiles.
